Session 1

INTEGRATED BRAIN VS FRAGMENTED BRAIN:

CALLING UP YOUR CLIENTS PREFRONTAL CORTEX

We all want our clients to use the skills we teach them, but how? We will explore the differences between the integrated brain and the fragmented brain, including how to identify each state in your clients. We will identify the pathway that is the first step to integration and how RLT activates that pathway. We will watch a tape of Terry working with _____ to bring second consciousness online, then identify what is happening in the brain as Terry works.

Learning Objectives:

  •   Define and identify the subcortical and cortical systems in the brain
  •   Define and identify the differences between an integrated and fragmented brain
  •   Understand the relationship between the neocortical and subcortical areas of the brain
  •   Understand the neurological pathways of second consciousness

Session 2

GET TO YOUR CLIENTS RELATIONAL BRAIN IN TWO WAYS:

BILATERAL INTEGRATION AND VERTICAL INTEGRATION

Learn how to support your clients autonomic nervous system so that they are physiologically available for connection and bonding. Understanding the work of Stephen Porges will give you new insights into effective therapeutic stances and Terry will share his work with _____ so that we can see how RLT supports autonomic nervous system function. You will leave this session with a new appreciation for the relational brain and how balance between the hemispheres is needed to welcome connection. We will watch a video of Terry working with _____ to understand how “Joining Through the Truth” integrates the right and left hemispheres.

  • Understand the differences and links between the left and right hemispheres of the brain
  • Use “Joining Through the Truth” to access the relational right hemisphere in an integrated state
  • Understand polyvagal theory and apply it to therapeutic stances

Session 3

GETTING RELATIONAL WITH YOURSELF:

HOW PARTS WORK INTEGRATES THE BRAIN

Understand how self-compassion changes the brain and how to turn it on in your clients. We will explain how parts work shifts the brain to form deeper integration and maturity. Watch Terry work with _____ and ______.  In these two videos, we will break down not only how the brain is changing in the client being worked with but what is shifting in their partner’s brain as well.

  • Understand the connection between the prefrontal cortex and the subcortical system
  • Understand the neurobiology of multiplicity of mind
  • Use inner child work to activate pathways of compassion
  • Use parts work to shift trigger responses and understand why it’s so important to do parts work with the partner present

Session 4

ATTACHMENT HEALING:

HOW RELATIONAL LIFE THERAPY USES MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION TO HEAL OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER

Learn how Memory Reconsolidation makes permanent change in the implicit memory system. We will explore Attachment Theory through the lens of implicit memory and see how Terry’s work with core negative image transforms attachment dynamics in relationships. Terry will do a live demo this session so that we can see it in action.

  •   Understand Memory Reconsolidation
  •   Understand Attachment Theory through the lens of implicit neural networks
  •   Use core negative image work to achieve reconsolidation
  •   Understand core negative image in terms of attachment repair

Session 5

 

EMPATHY, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND VULNERABILITY:

HOW THE INTEGRATED BRAIN SUPPORTS RELATIONAL EXPANSION

In this last session, you will understand how the steps laid out in sessions 1-4 lead to the brain being open to learning and growing so that skills you are ready to teach can be useful.  We will also watch Terry work with Dan and Nancy to help them increase their empathy, accountability, and vulnerability.  In the video, you will watch Terry help Nancy become more vulnerable with her husband. Their brains have been primed by Terry’s work to transform from immature, closed, and protected to open, resilient, and wise.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply Siegel’s nine prefrontal cortex functions to the definition of relational health as understood in RLT
  • Understand the brain’s ability to be open to learning

TOPIC: Healing Legacy Burdens: IFS model for Working Multi-Generational Trauma

Richard Schwartz began his career as a family therapist and an academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There he discovered that family therapy alone did not achieve full symptom relief and in asking patients why, he learned that they were plagued by what they called “parts.” These patients became his teachers as they described how their parts formed networks of inner relationship that resembled the families he had been working with. He also found that as they focused on and, thereby, separated from their parts, they would shift into a state characterized by qualities like curiosity, calm, confidence and compassion. He called that inner essence the Self and was amazed to find it even in severely diagnosed and traumatized patients. From these explorations the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model was born in the early 1980s.

IFS is now evidence-based and has become a widely-used form of psychotherapy, particularly with trauma. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical and effective set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, and more recently, corporations and and classrooms.

Jack Saul, Ph.D. is a New York State licensed psychologist and family therapist providing therapeutic services for individuals, couples, and families in Manhattan. He is is the director of the International Trauma Studies Program (ITSP), a research and training institute based in New York City.  ITSP is committed to enhancing the natural resilience and coping capacities in individuals, families, and communities that have endured and/or are threatened by traumatic events – domestic and political violence, armed conflict and natural disaster.  

He works internationally with reporters and photographers on covering war and survivors of severe human rights violations and with humanitarian, legal, and media organizations on the development and implementation of staff welfare programs. He completed his doctoral degree at Boston University and clinical internship in child and family therapy at the Judge Baker Guidance Clinic, Harvard Medical School. His book Collective Trauma, Collective Healing: Promoting Community Resilience in the Aftermath of Disaster was published by Routledge in July, 2013.

Janina Fisher, PhD

TOPIC: Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors

Janina Fisher, PhD is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Instructor at the Trauma Center, an outpatient clinic and research center founded by Bessel van der Kolk. Known for her expertise as both a therapist and consultant, she is also past president of the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, an EMDR International Association Credit Provider, a faculty member of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, and a former Instructor, Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Fisher has been an invited speaker at the Cape Cod Institute, Harvard Medical School Conference Series, the EMDR International Association Annual Conference, University of Wisconsin, University of Westminster in London, the Psychotraumatology Institute of Europe, and the Esalen Institute. Dr. Fisher lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on topics related to the integration of research and treatment and how to introduce these newer trauma treatment paradigms in traditional therapeutic approaches.

Rabbi Tirzah Firestone, PhD

TOPIC: Wounds into Wisdom: Healing Intergenerational Jewish Trauma

Rabbi Tirzah Firestone, PhD, is an author, Jungian psychotherapist, and founding rabbi of Congregation Nevei Kodesh in Boulder, Colorado. Ordained by Rabbi Zalman Schachter Shalomi in 1992, she is a leader in the international Jewish Renewal Movement and a renowned Jewish scholar and teacher.

Tirzah earned a masters degree in counseling at Beacon College in Boston, Massachusetts in 1982, and a doctorate in depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California in 2015. Her cutting edge research on the impact and healing of collective trauma draws on the fields of neuroscience, psychology, Jewish literature and mythopoesis. Her groundbreaking work called Wounds Into Wisdom: Healing Intergenerational Trauma (Monkfish, 2019) employs interviews, case studies, and her own autobiographical narratives to demonstrate how trauma residue passes from generation to generation and how it can be transformed. In 2019, upon the release of Wounds into Wisdom, Tirzah will be touring the US and facilitating workshops on intergenerational trauma healing.
